A New Bible Game

This just takes a few minutes and I like to do it before I begin teaching the Sunday school lesson. Simply ask them a Bible related question, usually a person, place or thing. Have everyone who thinks they know the answer raise their hands and then call on someone to answer. Those who knew the correct answer are experts for that day.

This is a good way to teach your class little tidbits from the Bible as well as getting them "loosened" up for the lesson.

An Interesting Bible Contest

Awhile back I had an interesting contest for my Sunday school class. This ran over the winter months and consisted of a Bible Sword drill and a series of questions on different passages of Scripture. I had a small plaque made with the name of our church and contest engraved on it.
I had them divide up into 4 teams. Each team had a captain that was responsible for their team studying. I put a chart on the wall by the door with each team listed and also the various Bible texts that the questions would be taken from.
We selected 1 Sunday out of each month for 4 months making a total of 4 rounds. Each round consisted of 10 Bible Sword drill references and approximately 20 Bible questions. One point was awarded for winning a Sword drill reference and 2 points for being the first to answer a Bible question correctly.
After each round I posted the scores and the plaque was hung over whichever team had the high score that round. After all 4 rounds I awarded the winning team with the plaque and a certificate which was hung permanently on one of the walls of our classroom.

Are Newsletters Important?

Very definitely. I think newsletters can be a tremendous tool, especially if you are dealing with children or young people. Newsletters work well with just about any group but it’s really satisfying to see a child’s eyes light up as he finds his name in print.
I’m a young people’s Sunday school teacher and I’ve been putting out a little newsletter for them for several years now. It is something they really look forward too and a lot of times I see the adults reading them over the shoulders of the young people.
Irregardless of the age or purpose of your group there are some basic things to keep in mind when doing a newsletter. It doesn’t necessarily have to be published on any kind of a schedule or time frame. On the other hand if you are one for having everything organized, then your group will know they can expect an issue the 1st Sunday of each month or whenever your publication date is.
Keep it simple. There are a number of desktop publishing programs that are easy to use. You can just print out something in a couple of columns on an 8 ½ X 11 sheet or get a little fancier and fold it down to make a four page 5 ½ X 8 ½ issue.
Whichever format you use, be sure to make your paper personal. People like to see their names in print. Keep abreast of what is going on in their lives. Scan the local newspaper and reprint things that pertain to them like honor roll lists, school happenings, and civic functions.
Include some humor but never embarrass anyone. Think about the person you are writing about.Be sure to check out your local bookstore, there are numerous books with clipart and other newsletter helps available. Also scour the internet for tidbits that pertain to your group’s function.
A newsletter is a wonderful way to communicate with your group. While it may take some time to make up a good issue and print it out, it is well worth the effort.
